Operating Unit Financial Controller

Job-Location: Leander

The Operating Unit Controller will manage and oversee the company’s general accounting functions and fiscal reporting. This role ensures the integrity of financial data by establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures. The Controller also prepares financial reports with insights and recommendations for leadership. Reports include: month and quarter-end close, preparation and analysis of financial reports, cash forecasting, journal entries, fixed assets, balance sheet reconciliation, inventory, intercompany transactions and GAAP/SOX compliance.

Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with executives in preparation of the annual financial planning process ensuring the annual plan reflects company strategic objectives.
• Manage the accounting staff including – A/P, A/R, Credit & Collections, Job Cost and Payroll.
• Review and evaluate the financial components of major bids within the division to support informed business decisions.
• Participate in the development, execution, and ongoing update of the division’s strategic plan.
• Analyze financial performance and provide strategic insights to support growth and executive decision-making
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, cost report estimates, and variance analysis
• Partner with the Executive of Revenue Cycle to improve cash flow and revenue cycle efficiency
• Drive financial systems optimization
• Collaborate cross-functionally with executives, department leads, and external stakeholders
• Contribute to organizational projects with ad hoc financial analysis and strategic support
• Establish, maintain, and enforce accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate, reliable, and compliant financial data.
• Oversee the preparation, evaluation, and accuracy of divisional budgets and operational financial reports.
• Oversee Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll activities within the division to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant processing.
• Supervise all core accounting operations: AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and collections
• Oversee month- and year-end close, including P&L, cash flow, balance sheets, and shareholder tax estimates
• Maintain and reconcile the General Ledger, bank accounts, and related records
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports
• Manage daily cash flow, disbursements, investments, and monthly commission payments
• Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Manage PEO relationships (payroll, 401(k), employee reporting, and benefits review)
• Prepare, analyze, and present financial reports, key findings, and actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
• Prepare and validate reports that summarize and forecast divisional business activity, including income, expenses, and budget‑to‑actual performance.
• Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of weekly job cost reports to support operational decision‑making.
• Conduct weekly check collection and deposits (onsite in Denver)
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax laws, and multi-state payroll reporting requirements
• Coordinate internal and external audits and implement improvements
• All other duties assigned

 

Qualifications:
• BA/BS in Accounting
• 10+ years of progressively responsible financial/management experience
• 3+ years in a Controller role. MBA/CPA is a plus.
• Experience with public company SOX control requirements and reporting.
• Construction industry background preferred with significant experience and related interactions with project operations and executive management.
• Capacity to work independently while meeting multiple, competing deadlines with quality deliverables.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, problem solving skills and keen attention to detail.
• Strong Microsoft Excel and data management skills.
• The physical activity and work environment required for this role includes:
o Travel as needed
o Sitting, standing, walking for extended periods in an office environment
o Frequently standing, walking, stooping, reaching, climbing, bending and reaching
o Manual dexterity for computer use, files and office equipment
o Occasionally lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds
• Pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
